When Nas started coming through, I was living in London. Tim Westwood would play these exclusives, including a really dope version of "It Ain't Hard To Tell" that had a much more open feel to it, with different drums. Now you may be thinking of the boot that was out with the machine-gun Biz sample at the beginning - it's not that one! This is another one!!! I think it must have been an initial draft that XP changed subsequently to what it is on the official release. Never heard or seen it anywhere since - Tim definitely had it down with the VIP early treatment.

Anyway, it was crazy hype back then, Nas was ruling over everybody, peeps was going bananas over those shows and the tapes. When Illmatic finally came out, it was a very tough period in my life as I was struggling financially and my father had just passed, so I really bugged out on that whole album for so many reasons.

All this to say I am a big fan of the Nasty, and this is one of many tracks I remixed. Picked this one in particular because it had a really original, reflective feel to it that corresponds to the phase in my life in 1994 that I am describing above. Flash cuts at the end, of course.
